Christianshavn Sports Centre

Red reflections

Situated by the canal at Christianshavn in Copenhagen, Christianshavn Sports Centre is a multi-purpose hall for Christianshavn Gymnasium, sports clubs, schools and community associations in the local area. The façade of the sports hall is red-painted wood, which draws references to the numerous historical buildings and boathouses in the area. The large vertical shutter-doors along the outer walls provide screening from the sun and create a perfect spot for taking a break along the canal. Inside, the hall offers a clear-cut, light and spacious setting for a wealth of activities. The double-height foyer houses a café area, offices and other functions, while the activities taking place in the hall can be viewed through a glass wall. Changing rooms, fitness area and meeting rooms resemble stacked boxes featuring different finishes such as raw concrete, plywood and black-painted wood. On the first floor, a multi-room with mirrors is placed adjacent to an open fitness area, the floor also has a large, open meeting room which offers views all the way to the Royal Danish Theater’s Playhouse. Along the canal, the wooden seats from inside the hall continues as public seating plateaus, where passing kayakers can take a rest.
